Grimes Discusses Outspoken Blog Posts
Talking to District MTV backstage at the Versus Versace launch in New York on 15 May, where she performed a number of her tracks to a packed out exclusive party crowd, Claire Boucher, aka Grimes, discussed her recent personal Tumblr posts regarding her experiences of the music industry. In these ‘open letters’, Grimes detailed how she didn’t want her words “to be been taken out of context” or for her to be “infantialized”, because she refused to be “sexualized” and was tired of “men who aren’t professional or even accomplished musicians offering to help me out (without being asked), as if I did this by accident…”
“I was just really pissed off,” said Grimes after District MTV complemented her on her honesty and openness. “I think I’d been pissed off for upwards of a year and I hate anger, it’s a really unflattering emotion. I felt as if I had to purge myself in order to move on with my life”.
Grimes initially made the comments online after realising that there was were things happening around her that were upsetting, but that others in the industry weren’t commenting on. “I feel like other people don’t get upset and I feel like sometimes people should. People don’t even realise anything is wrong until you say it is,” she said to District MTV, also commenting reflecting that the response to her comments had been positive and, most importantly, “positive from people that who I care about”.
Emerging on a rapid trajectory over the last 12 months following the release of ‘Oblivion’, Grimes has been thrown into the spotlight and subsequently had to navigate her sudden success. “It stressed me out for a minute; being in my life and then having this life where people want to stop and talk to you in the street, but you get used to it. I think there’s just that moment where you have to stop and adjust to certain things being public, and this is mine,” she said. “You want everything to be controlled, but because of the nature of the media you just can’t. Anything I say is going to be misconstrued in any variety of ways, but I’m developing a comfort with the idea that that happens. You can either freak out, or just accept it”.
Grimes also commented revealed that she was is currently working on new material and , hoping to have it ready for the end of the year. Bbut that also that she’s “I’m taking mymy time with it”, so nothing is confirmed just yet about her forthcoming new album.hoping to have it ready for the end of the year.
